Who in the world would take 100+ pills daily and why?
Bryan Johnson
His name is Bryan Johnson and he has plans to reduce his biological age to that of an 18-year-old. He has an extensive daily regimen that could be labeled by outside viewers as “extreme”. From taking 100+ pills every day to fasting for 16-18 hours daily, Bryan has quite an interesting approach to improving his health.
Bryan breaks up his supplement consumption into morning, lunch, and evening pills. A few of his morning/ lunch pills include ashwagandha, EPA concentrate, and cocoa flavonols.
Ashwagandha (600mg per day): This is an evergreen shrub that has a variety of benefits. It helps manage cortisol levels, reduce stress and anxiety, and aids in improved sleep quality.
EPA concentrate (500mg per day): Eicosapentaenoic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid. Bryan takes this supplement due to its benefits for liver enzymes and artery health.
Cocoa flavanols (500mg per day): These are bioactive compounds found in cocoa that have been linked to improved brain and cardiovascular health.
Later in the evening before bed, Bryan takes his remaining pills. Two of these include melatonin and DHEA.
Melatonin (300mcg per day): Melatonin supplements are synthetic versions of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is produced to help assist with the sleep cycle and tells your body it’s time to get some shut-eye.
DHEA: Dehydroepiandrosterone is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands. It serves as a precursor for the synthesis of other hormones, including estrogen and testosterone. Bryan has implemented this into his protocol due to DHEA production decreasing as we age.
Is this even effective?
According to the data on his Blueprint website, Bryan ages slower than the average 10-year-old, slowed his pace of aging by the equivalent of 31 years, reduced his brain's white matter hyperintensities by 50%, and much more. Of course, this is not all due to supplementations—It has been a combination of exercising, getting quality sleep, eating correctly, and many other variables that have shaped his current state of health. However, supplementation has been an important part of his regimen and can be attributed to some of his results.
Is this safe?
Bryan has deemed himself “possibly the most measured man in history” as he has an extensive team of medical professionals and researchers that watch over him daily. In his LA home, you can find a wide range of medical-grade machines that help track and measure every aspect of his health. They are constantly collecting data each day to help continue and build the most optimized routine.
Now it should be noted that maintaining good health does not require the consumption of 100 plus pills each day. Understanding the needs of your body and seeking advice from your doctor before taking any supplements is recommended. While Bryan could obtain the benefits of the supplements he takes from natural food sources, his caloric deficit requires the use of supplementation. All in all, it completely depends on the individual when it comes to the safety of consuming 100-plus pills and that is why it is important to do your own due diligence and understand exactly what you are taking.
